What is DigitalOcean?

What DigitalOcean is

DigitalOcean is a developer-focused cloud built around Droplets, its virtual servers, with managed databases, storage and app hosting on top. It suits developers and small teams that want flat, predictable pricing and clear documentation. It is not a cPanel-style shared host.

Droplet prices on the pricing page

Basic Droplets run $4 a month for 512 MiB RAM and 1 vCPU, $6 for 1 GiB, $12 for 2 GiB and $18 for 2 GiB with 2 vCPU. Beyond that: $24 for 4 GiB and 2 vCPU, $48 for 4 vCPU and 8 GiB, and $96 for 8 vCPU and 16 GiB. Each tier includes outbound transfer from 500 GiB a month; inbound is free. Bundled plans are capped at the monthly price, so a Droplet never costs more than the flat rate.

CPU-Optimized, General Purpose, Memory-Optimized and Storage-Optimized families start at $42, $63, $84 and $131 a month respectively.

Billing changes in 2026

Per-second billing for Droplets takes effect on 1 January 2026 with a minimum charge of 60 seconds or $0.01. The newer v5 Droplets bill by actual hours and are not capped at the 672-hour monthly ceiling, so left running they can exceed an equivalent bundled plan. Public IPv4 on v5 Droplets is a separate line, currently $0.00 an hour at an introductory price that may change.

The new-account credit and refunds

The pricing FAQ describes a $5 credit valid for 90 days, applied automatically; your card is charged only after the credit is gone or expires. The page adds that other promotional credits appear from time to time. Refunds are not offered except in extenuating circumstances via support. We found no Black Friday sale.

Who should skip it

Anyone who wants one-click email and a site builder, and beginners who do not want to manage servers. Budget buyers who only need raw RAM can find more of it per dollar elsewhere.

Decision rule: use the $5 credit to test your actual workload on a $6 or $12 Droplet, set a billing alert, and delete test servers when done.
