What is Evernote?

Evernote is a note-taking app known for web clipping and strong search. Today it is sold by Bending Spoons and mostly makes sense for people who already keep years of notes in it. A new user has little reason to start here.

The free plan is small

Evernote's plan comparison page lists the free tier at 50 notes, 1 notebook, 5 Spaces, 20 tags, 200 attachments, 1 GB of storage, 1 external calendar and sync on just one device. One device means your phone and laptop will not stay in step. Free is a trial, not a free notebook.

Pricing in 2026

The comparison page we opened did not print prices. A July 2026 thread on TidBITS Talk, quoting an email Bending Spoons sent to customers, describes two replacement tiers. Starter is $99 a year, or $14.99 billed monthly, with reported limits of 1 GB, 1,000 notes and 20 notebooks. Advanced is $249.99 a year, or $24.99 monthly, with unlimited storage. These are secondhand figures from a forum post and another review noted the rollout is gradual, so your account may show something else. Evernote's own comparison page confirms a 7-day free trial on the paid plans unless stated otherwise, and a 14-day trial for Enterprise.

Price history and discounts

One poster in the same thread says a grandfathered $75 plan became $140 in 2024. A pricing tracker recorded a first-year 40% New Year promotion on Personal that ended on 7 January 2025. Evernote's help center says its Black Friday and Cyber Monday discounts vary and may appear in the app, not on a public page. We could not verify any specific Black Friday percentage for 2022 to 2024, so none is listed.

Who should skip it

Anyone starting from scratch. Notion has a generous free plan and Plus free for students, and Apple Notes costs nothing on Apple devices. Evernote's remaining advantage is a decade of existing clips and its search.

Decision rule: stay if your archive is big and you search it daily, download an export before any renewal, and do not move in as a new user at $99 a year for 1,000 notes.
