What is IDrive?

What IDrive does differently

IDrive backs up several computers and phones into one shared quota instead of charging per machine. A single Personal account covers Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Android devices. That works well for a family with three laptops and modest data, and badly for one person with a giant photo archive who would pay less per terabyte elsewhere.

Free plan and tiers

There is a Basic plan with 10 GB and no credit card needed. Paid tiers on yearly billing are currently 5 TB, 10 TB, 20 TB, 50 TB and 100 TB. The yearly 5 TB plan shows $6.99 per month in the first year, struck from $9.99. 10 TB is $10.49 (list $14.99), 20 TB is $17.49 (list $24.99). Monthly billing for 5 TB is $11.99. Two-year billing for 5 TB is $179.82 for the full term.

The renewal catch

The page says the 30% discount applies to the first year and standard pricing applies from year two. So 5 TB at $6.99 becomes about $9.99 a month on renewal, roughly 43% more. Put a reminder in your calendar and compare before it renews. No refund period appeared on the pricing page, so ask support before assuming one.

Platforms

Windows 7 through 11, macOS 10.10 and later, and several Linux distributions including Ubuntu, Fedora and Raspberry Pi are listed, plus iOS and Android. The Linux coverage is broader than Backblaze offers.

Who should skip it

Anyone who needs real-time file sync and collaboration; IDrive is backup first and its interface is utilitarian. Also skip an oversized plan: if you have 300 GB to protect, a 10 TB first-year deal only means a bigger renewal.

Decision rule

Buy yearly 5 TB if you have several devices and under 5 TB combined data. Take a bigger plan only when you already have that data.
