What you get for the money

Proton's pricing page lists Unlimited with 500 GB of storage, 15 email addresses and support for 3 custom domains, plus VPN, Pass and Drive. Mail Plus sits below it at 15 GB and 10 addresses. The free account is small: 1 GB of storage and a single address, so it works as a trial rather than a daily driver.

Do you need the bundle or just Pass?

Proton Pass is sold separately, and it is the part most people should look at first. Reviewers say the free tier allows unlimited logins and devices, with a limited number of Hide-my-email aliases. Paid Pass Plus adds built-in two-factor codes, unlimited aliases, vault sharing and dark web monitoring. Pass Plus prices vary by source (reviews quote anywhere from about $2 to $5 a month depending on the term), so read the figure at checkout.

Pricing and the renewal catch

On the pricing page today Unlimited shows $9.99 a month on the 12-month plan ($119.88 billed upfront), crossed against a $12.99 list price. That page was running a promotion when we looked, which tells you the real baseline moves around. Renewal follows the plan you chose, so a promotional first year does not guarantee the same price next year.

Black Friday pattern

Proton discounts the 12-month Unlimited plan on Black Friday and does not rely on a coupon code. In 2025 it was 50% off, which put Unlimited at $6.49 a month. If that repeats, today's $9.99 is not the price to pay in late November.

Who should skip it

Skip Unlimited if your work depends on Google Docs or Microsoft 365, because Proton's office tooling will feel thin next to them. Also skip it if you will not move your email: paying for 500 GB you never fill is a bad trade. Check the VPN too, since it is bundled rather than best-in-class on price.

Decision rule: start with the free Pass account for passwords. Buy Unlimited only if you will switch your main email address within a month, and wait for the Black Friday 50% window if you can.
