What is Proton VPN?

Proton VPN comes from the Swiss company behind Proton Mail, and it is a strong buy for privacy-minded users, though the best time is probably Black Friday. Right now VPN Plus costs $3.49 a month on the two-year plan, 65% off. Last year's Black Friday deal was 75% off the same plan at $2.49 a month.

Read the billing terms closely. The current two-year plan is billed $83.76 for the first 24 months, then renews at $83.88 every 12 months. In other words, your yearly cost roughly doubles after the first term.

Who it suits

People who want open-source apps and a provider with a privacy track record. The free plan is genuinely usable, with no data cap, which makes Proton a good way to try a VPN before paying. Streaming-first users may get better value from NordVPN or Surfshark sales.

Our take: if you need it today, the $3.49 rate is fair. If you can wait a month, 2025's sale suggests a lower price is likely. No 2026 Black Friday price has been announced yet.
