Bitdefender Black Friday deal
Up to 78% off; Total Security 3 devices $19.99 first year
Antivirus and internet security suites protect against malware, phishing and ransomware. Windows includes Microsoft Defender, so paid suites mainly sell extras such as VPN, identity monitoring, password managers and device management. Decide which extras you will use before paying. Check lab results from the last twelve months, since product quality shifts between releases. Many users are already covered by built-in protection.

Microsoft Defender gives baseline protection on Windows. Paid products from Bitdefender, Norton 360, McAfee, ESET, Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, Avast and AVG, and TotalAV add layers. Independent testing labs such as AV-Test and AV-Comparatives publish results, so check recent scores.
Suites often add a VPN, a password manager, parental controls and cloud backup. Bundled VPNs can have data caps. If you already pay for a VPN or password manager, you may be paying twice.
Introductory prices apply to the first year and renew at much higher rates. Compare renewal cost and the number of devices. Multi-device plans can cost little more than a single-device licence.
Scans use CPU and memory. Lab reports include performance scores. Try the trial on your own machine.
Some governments restrict certain vendors. Consider your own risk and local guidance when choosing.
Look for behaviour-based protection and browser anti-phishing features, which matter more than signature scanning alone. Check whether they are in the base plan.
Check how to reach support and how easy cancellation is. Some vendors hide auto-renew toggles in account menus, so set a reminder.
If you only browse and use mainstream software, start with Windows Defender and see whether you miss anything. If you want a paid suite, compare Bitdefender, ESET and Norton on lab scores and device count. If you want a second opinion scanner, Malwarebytes fits. Skip any suite that you cannot cancel easily.
Running two real-time antivirus programs together causes conflicts. Another is ignoring operating system updates, which block more attacks than most suites.
For many users, yes, with sensible habits.
Macs have built-in protections, but malware exists. A lightweight scanner adds a second opinion.
Vendors discount the first year and renew at list price. Cancel auto-renew if you do not want it.
Basic free versions provide scanning. Extras are in paid tiers.
